Hoosier Hills Food Bank Gleaning Project
In an effort to bridge both the needs of farmers and food insecure households, Hoosier Hills Food Bank is beginning a Gleaning Project with area farmers, in which we will be relying on volunteer support to collect leftover crops from farmers' fields. Beginning this summer, HHFB will be working directly with Five Oaks Farms, a 90-acre farm located in Jackson County just south of Brown County State Park. HHFB would like to frequently travel to Five Oaks Farm to glean their fields for excess produce, and assist in pre-harvest activities so that more produce can be harvested and donated.
This partnership with Five Oaks Farms will only be sustained with the help of volunteers like you!
We are looking for:
* Committed and excited individuals that have an interest in gardening/farming, supporting local agriculture, and/or community food security.
* Volunteers willing and able to travel to Five Oaks on a consistent basis (i.e. every other week) for a morning and/or afternoon. Five Oaks is 32 miles south east of Bloomington. We will arrange car pooling with other volunteers.
* OR, organize a large group for a Day on the Farm! to assist owners Steve and Amalia Krecik with the maintenance of their crops.
* No prior knowledge about gardening/farming necessary but expect to work and get dirty!
* Day of the week will be determined based on volunteer response and availability. What day can you help out?
For more information or to sign up, contact Kim Kanney, Volunteer
Coordinator at Hoosier Hills Food Bank at 334-8374 or
volunteer@hhfoodbank.org.

>8/1 thru 8/26 ~ Art for All Seasons - Fundraising show for Sycamore Land Trust (SLT)
Art for All Seasons Raises Funds for Land Conservation
Art-lovers and conservationists will gather to celebrate and invest in protection of southern Indiana's natural landscapes and wildlife at a ground-breaking exhibition August 1-26 at Gallery North on the Square in Bloomington.
The exhibition, called Art for all Seasons, is the culmination of a unique partnership between non-profit environmental conservation organization Sycamore Land Trust (SLT) and Gallery North, a non-profit cooperative art gallery. Sales of artwork and accompanying year 2009 calendars featuring works by Gallery North artists will raise funds for SLT's land preservation and restoration programs. The member-owners of Gallery North chose to host the exhibition with its tagline, preserve*create*appreciate, because they value the natural landscapes they enjoy representing in their art and want to ensure the long-term beauty and health of our region for future generations.
Members of SLT and of Gallery North and sponsors of Art for All Seasons are invited to an exclusive Preview Party on Thursday, July 31, at Gallery North, 116 West 6th Street, which will feature live music by Striking Pair. The public is invited to the Opening Reception at the gallery Friday, August 1 from 5 to 8 p.m., at which country blues guitarists Mark Galup and Andy Hollinden will perform and Roots Restaurant will provide refreshments. Oliver Winery will serve wines both evenings.
Members of nine selected art associations and of SLT were invited to enter photographs, sculptures, and paintings in the juried show. Some chosen works were created during two plein-air "Paint-Outs" hosted by volunteers at SLT's nature preserves in April and May. All pieces were inspired by SLT's mission, "preserving our disappearing landscape." Rudy Pozatti, Tom Coleman, and Patti Pizzo are the judges.
Works by 34 artists will be included in the show. >8/13 ~ SIREN (Southern Indiana Renewable Energy Network)
At last month's meeting it was proposed that a statement of vision/mission/purpose be developed and presented at the upcoming SIREN meeting. A subgroup got together to develop the proposal, which will be presented for adoption Wed evening. This is an important step for our group, as this statement of purpose and vision will to a large degree define the group and our actions and activities from now on. The proposal has been circulated on this email list, so hopefully you have had a chance to read and review it. Hopefully we will be able to approve and adopt the proposal without to much debate and revision at Wednesday's meeting.
Assuming that the vision/mission/purpose statement is adopted, the next organizational step will be to identity a set of officers who are willing to take responsibility for seeing to it that the group moves forward with fulfilling the adopted mission and purpose. I would like to ask that everyone give some thought to (1) the types of official roles that would best serve the group, (2) to think about the individuals in the group that might serve well in those roles (maybe you?), and (3) about how we actually go about defining and filling those roles (a nominating committee??). I think it would be great to set the goal of having official roles (president, vp, treasurer, secretary??) defined and people identified for the roles for approval/election at the Sept. meeting.
In addition to these two important organizational steps, I propose the following additional items for the meeting agenda, other items welcome:
-Solar clothes dryer demonstration
-A brief report from Ted on the August 1 forum on renewable energy potential in Indiana
-Report from the workshop development committee
-Membership report
-Financial report
-Brief discussion on the desirability of participating in the Columbus Sustainability Fair in Sept.
-Office of Energy and Defense grant opportunities
-Door Prizes!

Twisted Limb Paperworks is a local art studio specializing in handmade
100% recycled paper and invitations. They recycle used colored office
paper and grocery bags into colorful new paper for special events. They
need your brown paper grocery bags to recycle, and will pick them up
from your home' porch or business on a monthly basis. Please e-mail
Rowenna at office@twistedlimbpaper.com or call 876-9352 if you are able
to help. You can feel good knowing that your bags are actually getting
recycled locally into a useful product.
Also, if you ever have a large amount of used colored office paper (at
least a case), please contact the company for a pick up. Black
tissue/crepe/craft paper scraps, while less common, can also be
recycled with Twisted Limb. Twisted Limb used Tichenor Publishing's
recycling for nine years, until recently, when the company was
purchased and moved to Ann Arbor, so they are looking for both small
and large long time suppliers. Please e-mail
Rowenna at office@twistedlimbpaper.com or call 876-9352 if you are ableto help. ____________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Citizens for Effective Justice (CEJ) was formed in response to the tragic, untimely death of James Borden, Sr. in the Monroe County Jail on November 6, 2003. CEJ members are citizens from all walks of life concerned about our overcrowded jail and about creating opportunity for those incarcerated to reenter the community as productive, contributing members of our community. We affirm the Constitution of the State of Indiana: Article I, Section 18 which states "The penal code shall be based on principles of reformation and not of vindicitive justice."
More information can be found on the CEJ website – www.citizensforeffectivejustice.org
CEJ holds general meetings every Saturday from 1:30 – 3 at First Presbyterian Church at 221 E. Sixth Street, Bloomington, IN 47408.
New Leaf, New Life is a not-for-profit organization that grew out of CEJ meetings:
Only through community participation can community problems be resolved

~ Pages to Prisoners meetings @ Boxcar Books & Community Center Pages to Prisoners meets several times every week to help send books to the imprisoned.
The regularly scheduled meeting times are:
Mondays (during the school year) from 7-9pm ,
Thursdays from 7-11pm, and Sundays from 2-5pm.
The Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project is an all volunteer effort that strives to provide free reading material to prisoners in the United States. By providing free reading materials upon request, we hope to aid in the rehabilitation process and stimulate critical thinking behind bars. Our volunteers are concerned citizens and activists interested in rehabilitation, rather than punishment.
The project exists to alleviate pain, boredom, and attrition and to provide a direct opportunity for self-education. Additionally, we exist because prison libraries sometimes fail in this respect, and are understocked, or are only able to be patronized during specific and limited hours. Finally, The Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project exists to inform others about the condition of the prison system in Indiana and throughout the nation and the effects of incarceration on our communities. Through the letters and books that we send and receive, we hope to build connections between those who are within the criminal justice system, and their communities at large.
